Spring cleaning

Wishing you all an auspicious Nav Samvatsar ( the Indian new year) which is today.

This day is also celebrated being the 1st of the nine day nature festival.

As the season changes, we find ourselves in the midst of spring. The yogis use this nine day period to do spring cleaning as well.

What is yogis’ spring cleaning? The yogis believe that there are 72,000 energy carrying channels in a body. Toxins through food, thoughts and work clog up these channels, preventing the pranic energy to flow freely.

Every six months, in the middle of autumn and and spring, this nine day period known as Navaratri come to help us.
This time is most conducive to detox.
The yogis employ the shad karmas in combination with diet of boiled vegetables, fruits and liquids, to ensure proper cleanse of the energy carrying channels. The shad karmas are trataka ( deep focused concentration on a chosen object), nauli (an ab exercise involving rapid twisting of the ab muscles), kapal bhaati (hyper ventilation with focus on exhaling), neti (the cleaning of the nasal passages with a rubber thread), kunjal (the drinking of a couple of litres of warm saline water and then throwing it out), and basti (colon irrigation )
